Manila International Workshop on 25 October 2008
The workshop, CHANGING PATTERNS of MIGRATION ...Taking the Health of Women and Girl Migrants Forward, is designed to provide recommendations for action that will be submitted to the civil society components of the Global Forum for Migration and Development which will take place from 27 to 30 October 2008 in Manila. Extending Services Delivery (ESD)
In 2005 the USAID Bureau for Global Health announced the award of a five year competetively procured Leader with Associate Cooperative Agreement for "Extending Service Delivery (ESD) for Reproductive Health/Family Planning" to Pathfinder International and its partners. Pathfinder International, in partnership with Management Sciences for Health (MSH), IntraHealth International, Meridian Group International, Inc. and the International Centre for Migration and Health (ICMH).
Migration and Diabetes
In May 2006 ICMH embarked on a twelve-country Collaborative Project of Migration and Diabetes. The project brings together Austria, Canada, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and UK in a two year project that will involve social epidemiological and biomedical research followed by policy discussions in all the participating countries, training of health-related workers, and formulation of guidelines.
Tsunami Evaluation Commission
ICMH collaborated closely with WHO HQ in the Tsunami Evaluation Coalition. ICMH was responsible with Dr Claude de Ville de Gooyet and Lezlie Morinière for assessing the ways and extent to which needs assessments undertaken in the wake of the Tsunami influenced the formulation and organisation of response by governments, donors, international organisations and NGOs. The assessment involved extensive field research in the countries affected by the Tsunami and headquarters of international organisations and donor governments.
WHO SEARO response to the Tsunami
In 2006 ICMH completed an evaluation undertaken on behalf of WHO SEARO on how WHO responded to the Tsunami and with what impact. The project was undertaken by Dr Manuel Carballo, Professor Nuntaran Vichit-Vadakaran and Dr Marc Van der Putten. It involved visits to the WHO office in Delhi for meetings with SEARO technical and administrative staff, visits to countries affected by the Tsunami, interviews with Ministry of Health officials, WHO country office personnel, and community representatives.
Public Health Consequences of Tsunami
In 2006 ICMH completed a report on the Public Health Consequences of the Tsunami. The report is the product of a project headed by Dr Manuel Carballo, Mr Bryan Heal and Ms Sayuri Daita. It involved two international meetings and a series of country studies undertaken by national staff in India, Indonesia, the Maldives, Somalia, Sri Lanka and Thailand during 2005.
Interns
In 2006 ICMH welcomed interns from McGill University (Canada), Stanford, Harvard, Chicago, Southern California and Kent State Universities (USA), Vienna University (Austria), Geneva and Webster Universities, Institute of International Studies (Switzerland), University of Linköping (Sweden), University of Tromso (Norway), Australian National University (Australia), L'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (France) and the International University of Germany.
Ten Years of Excellence
In June 2006 ICMH celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special dinner attended by previous and current partners including governments, foundations, private donors, universities, researchers and policy makers. The dinner was held in conjunction with the ICMH Annual General Assembly and the meeting of the ICMH Executive Committee. In November 2006 ICMH will continue to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a Scientific Meeting on Migration and Health, to be held in Rome.
